YEAR ONEYour first academic year is 44 weeks. You'll begin patient contact early in Year 1. The primary academic focus of the initial five months is on the basic sciences: Basic Sciences * Molecular Biology & Genetics * Pathology & Cell Biology * Immunology * Microscopic Developmental Anatomy * Gross Anatomy The organ systems' approach is utilized, integrating the concepts of physiology, anatomy and pathology to teach the following systems: Systems * Allergy * Cardiovascular * Cutaneous * Endocrine * Digestive * Hematopoetic * Musculoskeletal * Neuro-sciences * Renal * Respiratory The Year 1 course "Introduction to the Patient" teaches you basic principles of interviewing, history-taking and physical examination. You'll also become certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support and participate in growth and development courses. YEAR TWO The 42-week second academic year is a blend of clinical and didactic experiences, giving you: * Opportunities to use clinical problems to study pathophysiology and to revisit the sciences basic to medicine * Introduction to broad areas of clinical medicine * The tools and background necessary to enter Year 3 clerkships The second year begins with a course in sexual medicine and includes didactic blocks of several courses. Didactic Courses * Microbiology & Infectious Diseases * Psychopathology * Bioethics * Pathiophysiology * Pharmacology & Therapeutics Sessions later in the second year introduce you to a variety of clinical experiences. Through them you'll develop a clinical database and acquire skills of observation and physical diagnosis. You'll evaluate patients under the guidance of a preceptor in several clinical experiences. Clinical Experiences * Internal Medicine * Pediatrics * Surgery * Musculoskeletal Medicine & Rehabilitation * Dermatology * Radiology * Clinical Skills Acquisition Three weeks are devoted to preparation for clinical clerkships. Topics covered include: * Radiology * ECG * Survival Skills Workshop * Breaking Bad News YEAR THREE Year 3 integrates the core clinical clerkships (33 weeks), didactic courses (3 weeks) and a research experience (13 weeks). A three-week elective has been added to Year 3. The primary purpose of this elective is career exploration. You'll have an opportunity to select from a wide range of specialties for your elective rotation, including genetics, urology, anesthesia, chaplaincy and radiation oncology. You'll be encouraged to develop a program that reflects your career goals, individual strengths and broad educational needs. There are 42 weeks in the fourth academic year. The curriculum is comprised of elective clerkship rotations, didactic block and the Internal Medicine sub-internship. Time is allotted for vacations and visits to residency training programs.
